Acronyms the Cool Kids Use

texting-acronyms
Have you ever been on Instagram or overheard a teenager spew out a mouthful of letters only to think, “WTH (what the heck) are they talking about?” I’ll be honest, I’ve turned to Google on more than a few occasions to look up the definitions of acronyms in order to understand what the cool kids are saying. OMG and LOL are so passé now; these terms are part of everyday language from kids to news anchors. So to keep current with the latest and greatest phrases, here is my round up of the acronyms you need to know…

FOMO: Fear Of Missing Out

IMHO: In My Humble Opinion

FWIW: For What It’s Worth

SMH: Shaking My Head

IDK: I Don’t Know

LMK: Let Me Know

MCM: Man Crush Monday

WCW: Woman Crush Wednesday

TBT: Throw Back Thursday

FBF: Flash Back Friday

FTW: For The Win

IRL: In Real Life

GAL: Get A Life

AISI: As I See It

IIRC: If I Remember Correctly

CTO: Check This Out

ROFL: Rolling on the Floor Laughing

VSF: Very Sad Face

Bae: Ok, so this isn’t technically an acronym, but I’ve been hearing this slang word in music lyrics, on TV and the radio. What does it mean? “Bae” is used as a term of endearment, often referring to your babe/boyfriend or girlfriend. But it also has a broader meaning and can be used to label something as cool, as in “That car is so bae.”

(Note: This list only represents a fraction of all abbreviations that are used, which I found on the web. I have only included the ones I think are popular, or had me scratching my head trying to decode the meaning.)

So how many acronyms and definitions did you recognize? Were you already #ITK (in the know) or did this list have you #SYH (shaking your head)?!

Bae also means = before anyone else. Wow, I must be hip, cool, I mean on fleek? We should hang out at TPumps more to keep current. :)

I think these are hilarious and seems to be more and more of these popping up each and every day! Thanks for sharing!

I knew some of them–not all but then I try not to use them–I do not text!! I kind of worry about the generation today–will they forget how to spell altogether?

I recognized all those acronyms (mostly because I’m 23) but ever since I graduated college last year, I don’t really use them (only sometimes via text!) My mom teaches junior high and it’s like all those kids speak is ‘LOL’ or ‘OMG!’

I’m so behind on the terms. The only ones I’ve used from the list are ROFL and IDK. Some of these are completely new!

  6. Kim April 28, 2015

I guess I am cooler than I thought. I knew most of them.

So glad I am not the only one who has had to google before!!! I am fairly savvy but then every once in a while a new one pops up.

I love this list! I must admit that people have been texting me more acronyms lately that I had to look up on google! My most recent lookups were SMH and IMHO that people texted me!

Luckily I have two teenage daughters so I know all of these, however I still don’t understand why anyone would say “on fleek”! It just sounds ridiculous to me. Reminds me of fleas…does that make me old?

This is funny because I don’t know all the facebook language yet. lol . Great list indeed. It is all shorthand. Thanks for sharing.

  12. Fi Ní Neachtáin April 29, 2015

Great to finally find out what some of these actually mean! I’m only 25 but I’m so out of touch.

First time to hear those acronyms. I always use BTW (by the way) in my text message. Since it didn’t made the list, so I guess this is not from the younger generation of today. I also thought that BAE, in Korean Pop or Korean Drama world, means someone you idolize (coming from a fan) or an endearment to your KPOP idol or KDrama actor. I am not sure though but usually that is how I see some other fans address their favorite singers and actors.

Shaking my head at most of them. Thanks for this list! I might just figure out what my offspring and her cousins are saying.

I was actually wondering about Bae too so I looked it up and it is Danish for Poop. My daughter is 11 and says it all the time and it is supposed to stand for Before Anyone Else. I have not heard of most of those, just a few.
